Ir de compras sabiendo poquito inglés:
If you want to go shopping but feel your English won´t help you: here you have vocabulary and expressions which will make the experience easier.
Tipos de negocios:
- El supermarket o supermercado.
- El market o mercado, con sus diferentes puestos (stalls)
- Los diferentes puestos greengrocer's (verdulería), fishmonger's (pescadería), fruiterer's (frutería),baker's(panadería), butcher's (carnicería), ice-cream parlour (heladería)
- convenience store (tiendas pequeñas que abren hasta tarde y suelen vender comida, alcohol, cigarrillos y otros artículos)
- shopping centre (centro comercial) para comprar ropa en el Reino Unido y mall en Estados Unidos. Allí encontrarás secciones de ropa de caballero (men's wear), de señora (ladies' wear) y de niño (children's wear). También es posible que quieras visitar una zapatería o shoe shop. Y si lo que deseas es recorrer viendo vidrieras dices to go window shopping.
Otros tipos de negocios:
- Farmacia: chemist (Reino Unido) o drugstore (Estados Unidos).
- Ferretería: ironmonger's.
- Joyería: jeweller's.
- Juguetería: toyshop.
- Librería: bookshop.
- Quiosco: kiosk o newsagent's.
- Cigarrería: tobacconist's.
- Perfumería: perfumery
- Regalería: gift shop
Expresiones sobre rebajas
- Sales o rebajas son increíbles oportunidades para conseguir artículos a precios muy bajos. Mira las special offers (ofertas) y discounts (descuentos), pero sobre todo, no olvides revisar la política de refunds (reembolsos):
- Exchange Only (solo cambios): si un producto presenta defectos, se puede reemplazar por otro igual o diferente del mismo valor.
- Store Credit (cupones): si no estás satisfecho con un producto, te lo canjearán por un vale del mismo valor.
- All Sales Final: no se realizan devoluciones ni cambios.
- Complete refunds: se devuelve el dinero (generalmente dentro de un plazo limitado).
Si quieres intentar un regateo
- Regatear se dice haggling, pero para hablar con los vendedores es mucho más educado usar negotiate (negociar).
- Cada una de las partes irá haciendo ofertas sucesivas (offers) para llegar a un acuerdo o deal.
- What's the best price you can give me?: ¿Cuál es el mejor precio que puedes ofrecerme?
- Can you lower the price?: ¿Puedes bajar el precio?
- It's still too much, sorry: Sigue siendo demasiado.
- The highest I can pay is...: Lo más que puedo pagar es...
- If I buy more than one or two, can I get a discount?: Si compro más de uno o dos, ¿me puede hacer un descuento?
Specific words and expressions
Store(US)/ Shop (UK): Tienda
To do the shopping: hacer la compra (es decir, hacer la compra de esas cosas necesarias para casa: alimentos, artículos de limpieza e higiene…)
To go shopping: Ir de compras (de cosas digamos “no tan necesarias” como ropa, complementos…)
Opening hours: Horario de apertura de las tiendas.
- What are your opening hours?
- We are open from 9am to 5pm.
Fitting room (US) /Changing room(UK): Probadores.
- Where are the fitting rooms, please?
Try on: Probarse una prenda de ropa
- I’d like to try this T-shirt on
Price tag: Etiqueta.
- I cut the price tag off before I gift-wrapped the sweater.
Credit/ Debit Card: tarjeta de crédito/ débito.
- Can I pay with credit card?
Bargain: Ganga/baratija
Till (UK)/ Cash register: Caja registradora.
Sales: Rebajas.
On sale: En venta.
- Is this apartment on sale?
Do you have this dress in a bigger size? Tiene este vestido en un talle más grande?
Does this t-shirt come in yellow? Viene esta remera en color amarillo?
Thee trousers don´t have a price tag. How much are they? Estos pantalones no tienen precio. Cuánto cuestan?
Could you wrap them up for me? They're a present Podría envolvérmelos? Son para regalar
Do you sell any souvenirs here? Venden ustedes souvenirs aquí?
Can you send these things to my address in Prague? Pueden enviar estas cosas a mi domicilio en Praga?
Is this included in the price of admission? Esto está incluído en el precio de la entrada?
Muy importante: recuerda siempre decir “por favor” (please) y “gracias” (thank you).
